The adolescence of the street

പ്രിയ സായൂജ്

Holding hands as torch of pain

The silence begged helplessly

And in her withered eyes, I saw

A life broken, wasted, decrepit

Saying not a single word

With hands on pit of stomach

She stood, making me tremble

The few coins burning my palm

Then I knew she was hungry

Gave her food and enough curry

And she swallowed it un-chewed

A blissful scene still in mind

She may hardly be sixteen

Yet she suffered much, I felt

In a dirty piece of cloth

She is hiding growing youth

Has she no love of a mother?

To protect in these heinous times

Maybe, she vanished away

Leaving baby to beg and grow

Keep a weapon, dear child,

Just to save the self and life

There are hunters everywhere

To eat up your whole gentleness

Hunger subsided, she leaned

Thankful eyes touching me

I gave her a new dress peace

To cover the soft tenderness

When she parted gratefully

I saw stars in tired eyes

And a fairy’s smile on her

Dehydrated, dried lips

Then she turned away and went

Followed by my brooding eyes

And my silent prayers

For a peaceful life to the girl.
